What To Expect

What to Expect When Starting Therapy With Me:

Sometimes reaching out for therapy can be scary, and it can be helpful to know a bit about what to expect.  Below is a step-by-step summary of what beginning treatment with me could look like.  I hope this helps you to feel more comfortable in your decision-making:

The first step to exploring psychotherapy with me is to contact me directly.   I'll return your contact with an offer to have a brief conversation about whether or not I might be a good fit for you. This can either be through a ten-minute phone call or through an online form that I can send you. If we determine that I'm not the best fit, I'll suggest other referrals and talk with you about how to find the best provider for your needs.  If we decide to proceed with working together, I will send you your intake paperwork, which includes information about you, payment information, and info about my clinical and business practices.  Please be sure to read these closely!

Once I receive your intake information, I will review it and we will schedule our first session. This part of the process usually only takes a day or two, and includes me reviewing the information in your intake and verifying your insurance coverage (if applicable).

Then we will have our first session.  This session is a bit longer than the ones afterward, and is also more structured, as it involves me getting to know you and your needs on a deeper level, and talking about what we might do to help you feel better.

Sessions after our first one will likely feel more conversational, with you generally taking the lead on what we choose to spend time on.  I will listen and offer feedback with warmth and compassion, and we may talk about strategies for managing difficult situations or emotions.  These sessions are 45-55 minutes.

You can expect interactions with me to be respectful, timely, warm, and compassionate.  I will do my best to help you to feel safe and able to make the most of our work together.
